A position as PhD Research Fellow in Language Technology is available at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo. The fellowship will  be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the Department), assuming sufficient teaching skills. Otherwise, the fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work. Starting date is as soon as possible.

 

The main focus of the PhD project will be on the development and application of NLP techniques to access and extract information within the oil and gas domain. The candidate and the supervisors will decide on the ultimate topic for the project jointly, but examples could include relation extraction or sentiment analysis of domain data. The ideal candidate should have experience with both rule-based and statistical approaches to NLP, including machine learning. The candidate should be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of core NLP tasks, like tagging, parsing, named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, etc. Given the applied nature of the project, implementation experience and programming skills will also be given weight.

 

Eligibility

 

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Natural Language Processing, or in Computer Science with a specialization in NLP. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.

 

Scholarship

 

The position is remunerated by salary of the level 50 – 57, NOK 430,500 – 483,700, (approximately EUR 46,744 – 52,655 per annum).

  • CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work – scientific publications);;
  • Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation
  • List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee;
  • Research proposal describing aims for the PhD research;
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number).
