Research title: Real-time control and optimization for smart factories and advanced manufacturing

The research activity is in the framework of a three-years-long international collaboration project between Italy and Serbia, co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The goal of the project is to develop and test advanced techniques to optimally manage and control manufacturing plants in real-time. Sophisticated dynamical models of manufacturing plants will be developed and used to deploy Model Predictive Control systems able to schedule and adjust in real time the plant production, considering altogether the order forecasts, system constraints, and efficiency (throughput) maximization. Advanced condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, reconfiguration, and fault detection schemes will be developed as well and merged in the optimal real-time decisioning system. The methodology will include theoretical activities, software implementation, and numerical and experimental tests, using a test-bed already available. The activities will be in close collaboration among three partners: the Politecnico di Milano and the National Research Council in Italy, and Singidunum University in Serbia. The expected scientific/technical results are innovative techniques to boost productivity and efficiency in smart factories.


Specific tasks:

The research fellow will work closely with the groups in Italy and Serbia to develop modeling, simulation and control design tools, both for full production lines and for single machines. The control techniques will be based on numerical optimization (Model Predictive Control). Experimental validation of the developed approaches on a realistic test-rig by the fellow is planned as well. The fellow is expected to also contribute to disseminate the research results in the scientific community and to transfer them to potentially interested industries.


Type of appointment:

12-months research fellowship position with the option to renew twice, up to 36 months in total. The fellow will be affiliated with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, Politecnico di Milano. Exchange periods with Singidunum University of Belgrade are planned. Net salary: approx. EUR 1450,00/month. Additional top-ups for teaching assistance activities are possible. The position can be paired with a Ph.D. degree in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano (subject to a separate evaluation procedure).



M.Sc. Degree in a relevant engineering or applied mathematics discipline, e.g. mechanical, electrical, automation engineering, numerical optimization.
